Here’s a short post, reflecting back on some of my most favourite countries I have travelled as a solo female traveller! Let me know your favourite places in the comments!
New York
This is one of my favourite places that I have travelled to alone! I just loved the freedom I had in the big city, without being slowed down by someone else. Of course, it would have been nice to have someone to explore the nightlife with but really, I was too tired at the end of the day anyway with all the activities I managed to fit in! I felt very safe in New York, I guess because there are so many people around, even late at night. There’s so much to do for a solo traveller here, like walking in central park, museums, shopping, or going for a cruise on the circle line. A must do destination for any solo traveller.

New Zealand
This was another favourite country of mine as it’s just sooooo pretty everywhere! I went during spring, so the temperature was perfect, still some snow on mountain tops in places but also sunny and pleasant weather. I loved how many walking trails there were to explore from each town I visited. As it was spring, all the flowers were coming out and all of the trails were smelling so nice. Everywhere you go in New Zealand there is picturesque scenery.
Thailand
This was the first country I really explored by myself and I loved how easy it was to get around and how safe and comfortable I felt straight away. The locals are extremely friendly and helpful, the food is delicious and it’s so easy to catch public transport. In the city, the train announcements were in English too, which was very helpful, and a lot of the locals also speak some English so its easy to get by, without knowing the language. I would recommend Thailand for first time travellers especially, as it’s cheap, safe and there’s plenty to do. It’s also really easy to make friends here in the hostels.
Cambodia
Cambodia is a very special country and I like the fact it’s much quieter and a little more authentic than Thailand. The people are a little reserved but still just as friendly as the Thai’s. My favourite moment in Cambodia was seeing Angkor Wat at sunrise, as well as the other surrounding temples during the day time. It’s such a great country to explore and a world away from home.
Peru
I remember being so scared before I headed to South America on my own. I needn’t had been because I never felt unsafe when I was there. Of course there are certain dangers, and I took extra precautions than in some other countries, like only asking the hostel to book a cab for me and never going out alone after dark, etc. Peru is just so diverse and climbing Matchu Picchu was definitely my highlight. I met some really nice people along the way and remember the hostels were all of really good quality, as well as the Cruz Del Sur buses, that I took from place to place.

Bolivia
Another vast and diverse landscape. My highlights here were the Bolivian salt flats, in which I stayed overnight. The stars in the sky were the best I have seen anywhere else in the world. Without streetlights to brighten the sky, the stars were so bright and completely covering the sky and twinkling so bright. I also enjoyed going into the Amazon rainforest here, which was on my bucket list. Again, I felt very safe in Bolivia. As well as generally being responsible, I would also suggest finding friends in the hostels to walk around with if it makes you feel more comfortable. Although I did walk around La Paz alone and felt fine.
Abu Dhabi
This was one of my more recent trips and I still found it exciting heading out into a country I know little about! It was only for a stopover, but I took a cab to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This was absolutely stunning and definitely worth leaving the airport for! If I had more time, I would have liked to explore the city too, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. I felt very safe in the registered taxi I took, and the driver was friendly and welcoming, so any concerns I had quickly left me.
Tanzania
There’s something special about walking along a dusty roadside in Africa, being the only tourist around and saying hello to all the locals as you pass them. For a little while I was by myself in Tanzania, before my tour group started. I also volunteered at an orphanage so had to make my own way to and from, which allowed me to push myself out my comfort zone. Although I did not feel quite as comfortable as in say, Thailand, I made sure I took sensible decisions and didn’t walk alone at all at night. I enjoyed exploring the town of Moshi, where I was situated a week and simply relaxing in the café and people watching. Another fav highlight was going on safari! A once (or hopefully not) lifetime experience.

Many of these are also some of my favorite places I’ve traveled solo too! I’ve been wanting to visit Tanzania and Zanzibar for several years now. Hopefully next year if things get better.
Oh yes, you need to!
I’m dying to do a trip to Tanzania. I did a solo trip to South Africa before the pandemic and just fell in love with Africa. I’m still dreaming of sitting on a beach in Zanzibar one day.
I also love that you spent some time doing volunteer work! I spent some time volunteering at a dog rescue in northern China and it was by far one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had. It really gave me a better understanding of the people and the culture. I also made some amazing friends that I still keep in close touch with. Cheers!
Hi, thanks for your comment 🙂 Yes volunteering is a great way to meet people and become part of the local culture, or at least see it from a different perspective! When you get the chance defo head to Tanzania! Such a special place 🙂
