Drift over the emerald green waters…

Halong Bay in Northern Vietnam is one of the countries most visited places. Huge limestone pillars emerge from the emerald green waters, creating a dramatic landscape. Although extremely touristy there is a reason why- because it’s so beautiful.

There are numerous junk boats that sail through the islands ( over 1600 of them), drifting on the beautiful green water. Lush forest and jungle covers these islands, with small little beaches and many caves to explore as well. There are intricate carvings on the cave walls which are lit with various coloured lights giving a particularly magical feel about them.

You can pick a day tour, with a seafood lunch or an overnight tour. There are also 3/4 day tours available, taking you further out to the more distant islands. I did the 1 day tour and I think that was enough for me. Although waking up to a sunrise with that view is probably something to behold. Plus the further out the boat goes the less tourists there will be!

Lying on the deckchairs on the outer deck of the boat is relaxing but HOT so make sure you have plenty of water and sunscreen. It felt pretty good to lie on my deckchair whilst slowly moving through the huge rock formations and a way to relax after non stop travelling. Booking a tour is very easy through your hostel, just be sure to pick a company with good reviews. I went as part of a tour so we had the boat to ourselves- added bonus.

Best Time to Visit Halong Bay?

In terms of weather September-October is the best time to visit with clear skies and moderate temperatures. March-April is also a great time with cooler weather and blue skies. Monsoon season can be unpredictable. I went in July (rainy season) and had perfect skies but it was incredibly hot. Sometimes boats can be cancelled due to bad weather.
