PERU TRAVEL GUIDE

horses with snow capped mountains, Huaraz, Peru trek

Peru is a country of many climates, from desert, rainforest, beach, cities, mountains and lakes (like Lake Titicaca). This is the perfect country for an active traveller, with enough hikes and adrenaline activities to keep you occupied for weeks.

The Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu is a classic and is whole heartedly worth doing-even if it is a huge challenge. The views of the old Inca ruins set amongst the rugged mountains is truly atmospheric. Hiking in Huaraz and seeing the stunningly blue Laguna 69 was another one of my favourite trips.

Peru is also encompasses the Amazon rainforest, home to pink dolphins and howler monkeys. If relaxing on a beach is more your thing then check out Huanchaco. This small surfer town has a relaxed beach vibe and incredible sunsets.

For those wanting more adventure, then there’s loads of things to try like white water rafting, paragliding, horse riding, ziplining and so much more. Peru is an adventure lover’s paradise.

SOLO FEMALE TRAVEL IN PERU

Before my trip to Peru & Bolivia I was so nervous, and safety concerned. I really had no need to be. I never once felt unsafe and found it really easy to get around using ‘Cruz Del Sur’ (a tourist bus company). The buses were so cheap- even for VIP seats, and you get a meal and your own tv with English movies too!

In some of the bigger cities I walked around pretty late and felt fine- I only stuck to the main well-lit streets of course. I would make sure to pick an accommodation close to the cities and in the main areas, so you don’t need to wander far.

Also, I always booked a taxi by asking the hostel reception to book it for me using a reputable company. This goes for bus companies too- there have been some accidents with local buses so I would probably pay a little more for a tourist bus (they are still cheap).

BEST TIME TO VISIT PERU

Peak season: June to August. Warm and sunny and popular with the Inca Trail (although September to October are also pretty good for the trek). This is peak time and will be busy but the best chance for good weather.

Low season: December to February. This is wet season so not the best for trekking (the Inca Trail is closed in February for maintenance). The rainforest will be even wetter with a lot of mosquitoes. This may be a good time for visiting Lima.

Shoulder seasons: March to May and September to November. The shoulder seasons still have good weather. I trekked to Machu Picchu at the end of October and had great weather (until the last day). This time of year is also quieter and a little cheaper.

Impressive Day Hikes: Huaraz, Peru

Hiking in Peru is pretty specialPeru has got to be one of the most scenic countries I’ve visited, with pretty much every terrain possible. The Inca Trail: Four amazing days

Four amazing days, tired feet, injured knees, ups, downs, gringo killers, great food, funny guides, watching stars by night, early mornings, late night rum, all came down to this. Standing above the grey clouds, cold and wet and wearing a brightly coloured yellow poncho bought from a cheap Cusco market, I look around at this
