SOUTH KOREA TRAVEL GUIDE
South Korea is a beautiful country, often overlooked by neighbouring Southeast Asian destinations, but it’s a place that that’s definitely worth checking out. The people, although occasionally reserved, are very welcoming, polite and helpful.
The Capital, Seoul is full of life and this busy city never stops. Korean’s, to my somewhat surprise it turns out, love to party! There are numourus beer bars all over the city, which the locals love, as well as the famous soju drink (beware it creeps up on you!). There is plenty of shopping, contemporary art galleries and museums to enjoy too.
Seoul also has a more traditional side and taking a trip to Bukchon Hanok village is a great way to see how life used to be lived. A trip to the capital is also not complete without visiting Gyeongbokgung palace and watching the changing of the guards. Very touristy but worthwhile. Another beautiful palace is Changdeokgung, with pretty enclosed gardens.
Travelling out further from Seoul, you can hike up mountains, ski in the winter and relax on beaches in summer. My favourite trip was to Seoraksan mountains, a few hours from Seoul. With lots of walking trails, paths wind up to gorgeous viewpoints, freshwater streams and pretty foliage.
Busan is another popular city by the beach. It’s home to Gamcheon Culture Village and its gorgeous colourful rows of houses. This small village is so pretty, with small side streets, painted steps and walls, craft shops and friendly locals.
So why not add South Korea to your bucket list and start a new adventure?!
SOLO FEMALE TRAVEL IN SOUTH KOREA
I loved travelling solo in South Korea, especially in Seoul, I found it so easy to get around on the public transport. The signs are in English which helps a lot! Travelling to the mountains was a bit more of a challenge but the friendly bus drivers are very helpful.
I never felt unsafe in Korea, even walking around the busier places at night was no problem. There’s so much to do in the city to occupy the solo traveller, as well as lots of day trips to other parts of the country. I’d say this is an excellent place to travel alone.
BEST TIME TO VISIT SOUTH KOREA
The weather varies quite dramatically between seasons, so it depends on what you are looking for. However, spring and Autumn (Fall) are considered the most pleasant months.
Spring: If you are looking to see the cherry blossoms this is the time to visit. April to June has pleasant weather but can get busy.
Summer: July and August are warm but can be quite humid due to monsoon rains.
Autumn: September to November is another popular time to go. If you’re looking to see the stunning reds and oranges of the leaves, this is a great time for the Seoraksan mountains.
Winter: If you’re looking for winter activities or just to walk in the pretty snow then December to March is the time to visit. Although very cold it will also be quieter.
