BOTSWANA TRAVEL GUIDE

elephants in Botswana

Botswana has one of the largest populations of wild elephants in the world and is one of the best safari countries in Africa. Chobe National park is so beautiful and home to elephants, hippos, crocodiles and many more wildlife. You can also fly over the incredible Okavango Delta– something which I would recommend. See the animals from above and the flood waters over the stunning landscape.

You can also take a tour on the Okavango in a dugout canoe- as well as having a go yourself punting along the river. I stayed in a bush camp overnight out in the wild- a truly unique experience. If you don’t want to rough it, there are many 5 start lodges around the National parks.

From cruising along the Zambezi river to meeting with Botswana’s indigenous San tribe, there’s so much adventure to be had here. Botswana has such friendly locals too. Start your adventure in Botswana now!

SOLO FEMALE TRAVEL IN BOTSWANA

Botswana is one of the safest counties in Africa for solo female travel, with generally mosly petty crime. The men are friendly and polite and wont cause you too much trouble (in the bars, this can be more of a problem but your hotel/ safari lodge should be fine).

Do practice good safety precautions as always, do not go out alone after dark and stick to the main streets during the day. Short sleeves are fine in the game parks and towns but do cover up more rural areas. Do not flash valuable possessions or leave them in vehicles. Carry only what you need- don’t show that you are carrying expensive goods.

If following good safety precautions Botswana is a fantastic place for solo travel. The friendly and welcoming nature of the locals is something to be admired and travel in this part of the world should not be missed.

BEST TIME TO VISIT BOTSWANA

Dry season: From May to October is the dry season, with July to October being the most popular time to visit. Less vegetation means its easier to spot vegetation and the animals are more likely to gather by the watering holes. Mornings and evenings can get chilly so make sure to bring some warm clothes to.

Wet season: November to April (Summer) is wet season but it’s usually short showers during the afternoons. January and February have longer rainfalls. The benefit of visiting in low season is that the landscape is incredibly green, and the Okavango Delta is full and colourful- great for helicopter viewing. This time is also great for bird watching.
